Three Day Road: Entry 8

The war is still progressing and there is no sign of either side giving up. The soldiers are starting to lose hope of ever being able to going back home again. Xavier is in world of pain, he has seen too many of his friends die from the enemy snipers and is starting to go mad himself. His closest friend Elijah is being devoured hungrily everyday by the deadly morphine. It seems the war has changed everyone, I myself can barely recognize any of them because they have all gone mad. What will happen to Xavier and Elijah and the rest of the soldiers. Will they be able to survive and go back home?

Three Day Road: Entry 7

The Cree back then seems to have been in dire conditions. During the winter, where food were scarce, hunters ventured out into the woods with their family in order to find food to feed their young ones. But because most animals hibernate during winter, hunters would often fail to find food and there were times where cannibalism occurred. The people who ate human flesh were referred to as "windigo" by the Cree and were killed as soon as they were discovered. Going as far as eating your companion... life must have been very difficult back then for the Cree. What would you do if you were in a similar situation?

Three Day Road: Entry 6

During WWI, many of the aboriginal people participated in the war along with the Canadian soldiers. This created language problems between the aboriginals and the English speaking Canadians because not many of the aboriginals were capable of speaking English. The lack of communication between the two might have reduced the efficiency of teamwork and might have lead to unecessary death among the soldiers. So my question is, how does the language barrier that exists in our society today affect us? There are many people of different backgrounds living in Canada and large number of them are not able communicate through English. So what can we do to reduce the language barrier that put us into separate language groups?

Three Day Road: Entry 5

Drug seems to play an important role in this novel because it is used frequently among the characters. Every time someone is injured or just isn't in the mood, drug seems to be the first thing they rely on. Even the main characters, Xavier and Elijah who were disgusted by the use of the drug morphine, ended up becoming addicted to it. It makes me wonder, were there drug abuses among the soldiers during WWI? And sometimes, I wonder what kind of feelings are associated with drugs. Does it make you feel good? If so what does it feel like. But I guess I shouldn't get too curious ha ha. Like they say, some things are better left unknown.

Three Day Road: Entry 4

It is expected that there are killing and violence in this book since it is about WWI. I personally don't mind descriptive words and imagery, in fact, I love them since it makes reading more interesting. However, when it comes to blood and gore, I just cannot stand it. And since this book is filled with them, I sometimes have a hard time reading it, because when I do read it I feel weak and light-headed. I wasn't always like this though, I didn't mind watching bloody scenes in movies when I was young. I might have developed this fear from watching too much violent movies. Anyways, even though it is just words, the tiny little detail the book gives make it no different from watching a movie. So I might have some trouble reading the rest of the book. Oh well, I chose this book so I guess I'll have to finish it.

Three Day Road: Entry 3

Although I had a rough start reading this book because of all the unfamiliar words and the constant flashbacks, i'm really starting to enjoy it. The anticipation created by the ongoing war keeps me on my toes almost as if I was actually part of the battle. The sound of bullets whizzing by and the loud explosions caused by the German shells seem all to realistic, and I sometimes fear that one of them might actually hit me. Nevertheless, I think this is a great book. I didn't  learn much from the book yet, but I feel like I've experienced something that I will never forget. And I find it truly amazing that you can experience all these great things in life just by reading books.

Three Day Road: Entry 2

The first thing that I noticed when I started reading the book was that there were words which I wasn't quite familiar with. The words, which seemed to have been spoken by the Native-Canadians, like "wemistikoshiw" and "hookimaw" were distracting at first. But as I read on, I began to get more and more familiar with these words. Although it may not seem like much, I was quite fascinated by how my brain could interpret these words that I have never seen before.

Three Day Road: The Start

Three Day Road, a Canadian novel by Joesph Boyden tells a tale of two young men who were dragged into the bloody trench warfare of WWI. Seeking a Native-Canadian point of view of WWI, I have decided to read this particular novel. Throughout my reading, I hope to have deeper understanding of the emotional conflict as well as the struggles soldiers faced during the battles. Seeing that life wasn't easy back then, how does the quality of life today compare with back then? Has it become better or worse, and how might this affect the future generations?
